Growing Our Future: Local To Global Food Sovereignty Film and Discussion
In honor of Cesar Chavez’s commitment to community empowerment and self determination, the Ecology Center is hosting a night of community education and exploration around the topic of food sovereignty–the right of peoples to define their own food and agriculture systems. Come learn about struggles for reclamation of land and strategies for regaining control of our ailing food system. We invite you to enjoy a night of film, food, and presentations about inspiring examples of community based food production, ranging from urban farmers in LA to sustainable agriculture in Nicaragua.

Presentations:
Eric Holt-Gimenez, the Executive Director of Food First will present on Food Movements Unite, food sovereignty, and the challenges and transformations of local and global food systems (www.foodfirst.org)
Film Screening of “Save The Farm,” a short 30 minute documentary about the largest urban farm in South Central LA, followed by a discussion.
Nicaragua Center for Community Action will talk about the campesino a campesino movement (farmer to farmer movement) in Nicaragua and their work around sustainable agriculture, biodiversity, seed banks, and anti-GMO activism (www.icasprojects.org)
Light snacks provided during event.

This event is part of the Berkeley Cesar Chavez Commemoration, which emphasizes service learning and environmental justice as the best means of honoring César Chávez and the farmworkers movement.
